The Research Department of Stefano Boeri Architetti, in collaboration with the University of Milan and the University of Sassari, is among the authors of the scientific paper “Afforestation priority for multiple objectives at national scale: Italy as a case study,” published by the journal Restoration Ecology.

In this study, a goal-oriented workflow is presented to identify national-scale afforestation priorities tailored to four ecosystem service goals: ecological connectivity, human health, climate mitigation, and water regulation. Using Italy as a case study, the paper provides both goal-specific maps and an integrated national assessment.

The findings highlight that spatial priorities for different afforestation goals show limited overlap, underscoring the importance of clearly defining objectives to maximize the delivery of ecosystem services. In an era of growing attention toward Nature-based Solutions and large-scale afforestation pledges, this research offers a strategic perspective and actionable guidance.

Regarding the case studies, the paper includes Parco Italia, the vision developed by Stefano Boeri Architetti and AlberItalia. This project plans to extend urban forestry to 15 metropolitan areas, connecting them via green corridors to the Apennine ridge and the Alpine system, creating a single large infrastructure across the entire peninsula.
