The YanQuingLi project consists in the refurbishment of a former warehouse located in Shanghai, Suzhou South Road Nr. 955-991, which occupies an area of 6,233 square meters. The historic wooden structure dating back to 1929 overlooks the Suzhou river with facades characterized by the scanning of regular windows and a brick wall surface.

Stefano Boeri and his Chinese partner Yibo Xu worked, on the one hand, by following the need to protect the existing historic architecture and, on the other, the need to create new office spaces.

The intervention designed by Stefano Boeri Architetti China maintains its original structure and appearance using modern technologies to make the building more efficient and to highlight its main typological and architectural characteristics, taking into account the history, architecture and local culture of the surrounding environment, of the landscape and of the connection between the buildings.

The atrium is reopened and used as a main entrance to the building, allowing the community to establish new connections between external and internal public space, making it possible for users to access it and enjoy the new architectural reality capable of protecting the historic values of the building and making it collaborate with contemporary structures and uses.

The interiors are designed in such a way that the work spaces are integrated with many other functions, in order to be able to host international fashion academies to collaborate with the local realities, showing the completed works in a dedicated exhibition space.

The intervention built in YanQuingLi becomes a powerful image of historical architecture next to the Suzhou river and brings new life to the local industry, becoming an urban model to encourage the development of new entrepreneurial reality dedicated to the world of fashion.
