The Wonderwoods project, built in the heart of Utrecht by Stefano Boeri Architetti and MVSA Architects as part of the urban regeneration plan in the Beurskwartier — the new pedestrian area adjacent to Utrecht Central Station — has achieved the highest possible rating, ‘Outstanding‘, assessed using the BREEAM-NL In-Use methodology, the Dutch version of the environmental certification system BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method).
This confirms that the sustainability ambitions have not only been realised in design and construction, but are also being delivered in the building’s daily use and management. The office component of the building had previously achieved a BREEAM-NL New Construction and Renovation 2014 v2.0 ‘Excellent’ certificate. To also demonstrate performance in use and management, the building was subsequently assessed using the BREEAM-NL In-Use methodology.
Throughout this process, CFP Green Buildings fulfilled the role of Expert and guided a.s.r. real estate through the entire BREEAM-NL In-Use certification process. CFP was responsible for the technical assessment, substantiating performance and sharpening sustainability criteria across the various BREEAM categories.
In cultural terms, Wonderwoods Vertical Forest represents a new addition to the landscape of contemporary European architecture — a significant experiment in the demineralisation of vertical architectural surfaces — and at the same time establishes a new urban landmark for Utrecht, owing to its strategic location in the city centre and its high functional mix, oriented towards inclusion for all citizens.
