The Slovak architecture publication ASB publishes an article dedicated to Urban Oasis, a project by Stefano Boeri Architetti in Bratislava, on the occasion of the public presentation of the first phase of the project.
The Urban Oasis project intervenes on an area that previously housed major industrial facilities — including the Jurkovič heating plant, the Apollo mineral oil factory, the “Kablo” cable factory and the Klingerka textile factory — regenerating the area through a system of residential spaces, green areas and public functions with the aim of defining a new urban core for the city. The masterplan develops across a triangular plot of 32,500 sqm and comprises five volumes — a tower and four medium-density buildings — arranged around a new large central public park, open to all: a series of paths, open spaces and shared areas run through the park, enriching the neighbourhood with a new urban landscape accessible to all citizens and enhancing the porosity and permeability of the district.
“With Urban Oasis, Bratislava takes a decisive step towards the model of the ‘archipelago metropolis’: a city in which neighbourhoods embrace the functional and social diversity typical of European urban life, while at the same time integrating living nature into their core and onto building facades,” states Stefano Boeri.
“We focused on how to bring architectural quality to a former industrial area undergoing major transformation, on how to maximise natural light while protecting residents from wind and noise pollution, and on how to make the park not only a flexible, high-quality public space, but also a key element in regulating the microclimate, humidity and urban heat island effect,” states Pietro Chiodi, Partner of the studio and project leader.
