The Multipurpose and Civil Protection Center of Norcia has been designed by Stefano Boeri Architetti within a larger project for the cultural and economic enhancement of Norcia area, and was realized thanks to the funds of the campaign “Immediate Help. Earthquake in Central Italy 6.0 “, promoted by Corriere della Sera and TG La7.
Conceived as a space for Civil Protection, to provide the Municipality of Norcia a safe place for residents to gather during the seismic emergency, the Multipurpose Center was built in a little more than three months and delivered to citizenship on June 30th, 2017. It is currently being used as a multifunctional center and destined for local associations to resume their activities.

Spread over an area of 450 square meters, the building houses two multipurpose halls (one with 150 seats and one with 70 seats), divided by a central service block.

The project is characterized by research of harmony and continuity of materials and shapes with those of the surrounding area. Made of wood, with large windows, the building is covered by a dynamic roof, which resembles the sinuous trend of the surrounding Sibillini Mountains. Highly resistant and flexible material, in the first place, wood responds to the need for a constructive anti-seismic construction. Specifically, the structure of the Center is realized in Glulam fir, with larch paneling: an essence that over time turns to a changing color through oxidation that accords with the natural shades of Norcia territory. On its long sides, the design alternates two structural facades, consisting of large windows with high seismic resistance. The natural colors and the transparency of the glass synthesize a will of symbolic reconciliation between man and nature.

The geographical location of the Center, a true gateway to the Park of the ‘Marcites’ and the Benedictine Trail System, gives to the building  a function of environmental enhancement, along with economic and cultural.
