call to action urban forestry

On Radio 24, within the column Being and Having, the topic of urban greenery is discussed in depth, citing the manifesto drawn up by Stefano Boeri Architetti as a call to action for urban forestry, the urban forestation of city soils.

The firm’s call is addressed to all professionals in the sector, international organisations, funding agencies, universities and research bodies, and NGOs, with the aim of increasing permeable and green areas in the city through the creation, for example, of parks and gardens, urban gardens on the roofs of houses, green façades, networks of green corridors (tree-lined avenues, rows of trees, etc.) to connect parks, forests and green architecture, orbital forests and green architecture.

This last point includes, for example, the Bosco Verticale in Milan, designed in 2014 to host vegetation equivalent to that of 30,000 square metres of forest and undergrowth, concentrated on 3,000 square metres of urban area: a new architectural paradigm to encourage change, towards an architecture of biodiversity.

But the Bosco Verticale is only the starting point: as we read in the conclusion of the manifesto, if we want to reverse climate change, favour the survival of living species, and make our cities greener, healthier and more pleasant, urban forestation must become a priority on the international agenda of governments and international and local institutions.
