Inside Business Story, a weekly publication of the French newspaper Les Echos, Pierre de Gasquet signs an in-depth article on the city of Milan and its economic “renaissance,” interviewing Stefano Boeri about the architectural regeneration that has guided the city’s development.
A symbol of this new approach, the Bosco Verticale, a project by Boeri Studio (Stefano Boeri, Gianandrea Barreca, Giovanni La Varra) completed in 2014 in the Porta Nuova area, is cited as a building-prototype of a new architecture of biodiversity, which places at the center no longer just humans, but the relationship between humans and other living species.
A metaphor for the city, the building has become a manifesto, a laboratory of innovation that aims to foreground the integration of green in cities, of trees in buildings, toward a new way of living and inhabiting the city.
“Milan is a laboratory for ecological transition,” declares Stefano Boeri, and this is the focus of the article, which also considers other forestation projects, such as Forestami, which envisages the planting of 3 million trees in the Milan metropolitan area by 2030; or Fiume Verde, an urban reforestation project of the city’s seven disused docks, or Arcipelago Milano, which envisages 83 districts immersed in greenery.
