Corriere della Sera has published an article by Virginia Piccolillo dedicated to the town of Amatrice, on the occasion of the earthquake that struck Marche, Umbria, and Lazio starting on the morning of August 24, 2016, presenting the progress of the House of the Future project, which involves the reconstruction of the Don Minozzi Complex, a historic site of great importance for the town and the entire area.
The project, currently under construction, aims to strengthen the idea of community spaces as originally conceived by Father Giovanni Minozzi: places of worship, but also of study and gathering, envisioned as semi-collective spaces dedicated to new functions such as civic services, community life, and hospitality.
The architectural design preserves and reinterprets the characteristic elements of the original layout, focusing above all on the open spaces, the ground-floor porticoes, the design of the façades, and the alignment with the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, the Fontana delle Pecore, and the Torre Civica of Amatrice, in order to enhance the complex’s urban connection.
“Preserving the spaces that hosted human and emotional relationships, without chasing utopia. It was the most difficult challenge, but also the most beautiful. Sixty per cent of the rubble was processed on site and used for paving. And the excavation soil from the foundations will be reused for all the open spaces and gardens. It’s moving: it’s the phoenix rising from the rubble,” says Stefano Boeri.
