On Friday, October 9, the Magazzini Ilva in La Maddalena will host Isole #2 – Architettura e paesaggi dell’accoglienza (Islands #2 – Architecture and Landscapes of Welcome), a conference-workshop promoted by the Co.a.st. Association, focusing on the relationship between architecture, hospitality, migration, and climate change, and Stefano Boeri takes part.
The event brings together professionals, architects, and scholars from three continents, who will discuss the major social issues that are transforming Mediterranean territories.
At the heart of the proceedings is one question: how can we design places of welcome that simultaneously protect people’s dignity, the quality of space, and the landscape?
The program will conclude with the signing of the “Manifesto of La Maddalena,” an ethical document that aims to help define the social role of the designer in the face of the changes affecting the Mediterranean, from migration to the climate crisis, as well as the need to rethink spaces of welcome.
In this context, Stefano Boeri will speak on The Archipelago as a Metaphor for Good Politics, which explores the concept of the archipelago as a spatial metaphor for an open society. It offers an alternative to the traditional view of identity as a closed, stable, and self-sufficient unit. Instead, it is a form of plural unity: differences need not be erased in order for a common space to exist.
