The City of Prato’s Prato Urban Jungle project, two of whose interventions are designed by Stefano Boeri Architetti, wins the Environment Award 2023 of FUTURE4CITIES, a festival conceived and designed by Will Media, FROM, BASE Milano and the European Commission’s Representation in Italy.

The event, which is open to the public to celebrate the most significant urban innovations and stimulate public debate, awards prizes to projects developed within 6 macro-categories (Environment, Mobility, Community, Local Economic Development, Innovation, Urban Regeneration).
In the Environment category, which awards actions to combat climate change and adaptation plans; interventions to reforest, protect and promote biodiversity; interventions to improve air and water quality; actions to promote the production of energy from renewable sources and efficient use of natural resources; and promotion of sustainable food systems, Prato Urban Jungle, a project that pursues a new conception of the city’s open spaces and green areas, where nature is an active tool for safeguarding citizens’ health, won first prize.

The intervention – divided into 3 pilot areas and realised by the Municipality of Prato with European funds from UIA Urban Innovative Actions – sees the participation of Stefano Boeri Architetti in the redevelopment of the Consiag – Estra headquarters, a classic office building, and in the regeneration of Prato’s public housing in Via Turchia.
The Prato Urban Jungle project implements different scales of Urban Forestation interventions to radically improve the social and environmental quality of the urban context, through the combination of Nature Based Solutions developed by means of innovative and sustainable technologies specifically designed and applied on green façades and roofs, introducing new qualitative, spatial and living standards.
