From 16 to 22 September, during European Mobility Week, Milan hosts the first edition of MOBIDAYS, a seven-day event dedicated to sustainable, accessible and inclusive urban mobility. The programme includes the Mobility Forum at Castello Sforzesco, where the Research Department of Stefano Boeri Architetti presents the project ELABORATOR.

Each day, the Mobility Forum stage will feature debates and in-depth sessions on the main themes of urban mobility: accessibility and walkability, public transport and taxis, cycling and shared mobility, construction sites and logistics. The focus is on the present situation as well as on the vision Milan is pursuing for public space, air quality and the fight against climate change.

ELABORATOR stands for “The European Living Lab on designing sustainable urban mobility towards climate neutral cities”. The project uses a holistic approach to plan, design, implement and deploy specific innovations and interventions for safe, inclusive and sustainable urban mobility. These interventions include smart monitoring and control tools, the redesign and dynamic allocation of spaces, shared services, and the integration of active and green transport modes.

Developed with the involvement of the Research Department of Stefano Boeri Architetti, the project combines technological innovation with participatory approaches. Its aim is to improve mobility for people with visual impairments and to actively involve vulnerable groups in the design process.

Trudo Vertical Forest designed by Stefano Boeri Architetti is featured in Wohnen / Housing (Detail Edition), a publication dedicated to pioneering projects in social housing, economical construction and the transformation of existing buildings.

The project represents the first application of the Vertical Forest model to social housing. Completed in 2021 on the former Philips industrial site, the 19-storey tower provides 125 social housing units, ranging from 35 to 50 square metres, with balconies and more than 200 integrated planters.

The project explores how housing affordability can coexist with architectural quality and biodiversity.

The building’s construction also responds to the need for efficiency and cost control. Through the use of prefabricated construction technologies, the construction period was reduced by two months.

In issue 194 of Arketipo magazine, from September 2026, an article is published dedicated to the project of a green promenade for the Cagliari waterfront, carried out by the temporary grouping of MATE Società Cooperativa, Stefano Boeri Architetti, StudioSilva, S.T.P., MIC-HUB, together with archaeologist Demis Massimiliano Murgia, which involves the redevelopment of the Via Roma promenade, an intervention along the Port front, and the reorganization of Piazza Matteotti.

The new urban and landscape intervention restores the social and environmental value of Cagliari’s waterfront through a green promenade that revives the original nineteenth-century function of Via Roma. Drawing on Cagliari’s tradition of tree-lined avenues, the project defines a continuous, pedestrian, shaded public space that acts as a “green lung” and connecting element — both longitudinally, between the Railway Station and Piazza Ingrao, and transversally, between the city and the sea.

Based on transport studies that redesigned the mobility system, the project involves narrowing two lanes of the main roadway in order to extend the city’s public space all the way to the sea.

In this way, the new promenade triggers the creation of a new park and a space open to the city, becoming a connecting element between the waterfront and the main public functions facing it, enhancing the entire area from a cultural, social, and environmental point of view.

The same system makes it possible to redefine, over time, the relationship between homes, shared workspaces, and common areas without compromising the overall architectural identity, allowing the complex to evolve alongside the needs of its residents.

“The Ibiza project is strategic for the future of European cities, because it proposes social housing that uses wooden prefabrication according to a modular system that can be readapted to different contexts. Green, wooden, modular residential architecture that is accessible to all is the real, major answer for public urban regeneration policies,” says Stefano Boeri.

Corriere della Sera has published an article by Virginia Piccolillo dedicated to the town of Amatrice, on the occasion of the earthquake that struck Marche, Umbria, and Lazio starting on the morning of August 24, 2016, presenting the progress of the House of the Future project, which involves the reconstruction of the Don Minozzi Complex, a historic site of great importance for the town and the entire area.

The project, currently under construction, aims to strengthen the idea of community spaces as originally conceived by Father Giovanni Minozzi: places of worship, but also of study and gathering, envisioned as semi-collective spaces dedicated to new functions such as civic services, community life, and hospitality.

The architectural design preserves and reinterprets the characteristic elements of the original layout, focusing above all on the open spaces, the ground-floor porticoes, the design of the façades, and the alignment with the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, the Fontana delle Pecore, and the Torre Civica of Amatrice, in order to enhance the complex’s urban connection.

“Preserving the spaces that hosted human and emotional relationships, without chasing utopia. It was the most difficult challenge, but also the most beautiful. Sixty per cent of the rubble was processed on site and used for paving. And the excavation soil from the foundations will be reused for all the open spaces and gardens. It’s moving: it’s the phoenix rising from the rubble,” says Stefano Boeri.

The New Yorker has published an article by Eric Klinenberg titled “The End of the European Summer,” dedicated to the recent heat waves that have hit major European cities, in which the Bosco Verticale is cited as a possible example of a Nature-Based Solution for countering the urban heat island effect.

The journalist devoted part of the article to his visit to Milan, to Bosco Verticale, and to the Stefano Boeri Architetti studio, where he interviewed Stefano Boeri on the subject.

During the meeting, Boeri reiterated that vertical forests respond not only to an aesthetic logic, but also offer concrete ecological benefits: tree canopies absorb CO2 and fine particulate matter, lower the internal temperature of buildings, and reduce the energy needs for cooling. The architect also recounted the origins of Forestami, the civic initiative he founded in 2019 with the goal of planting three million trees in the Milan metropolitan area by 2030, stressing that it is not so much the number of trees that makes the difference, but rather the extent of their canopies and the resulting shade they produce.

Klinenberg also visited Parco Nord Milano, where he met Forestami’s Maria Chiara Pastore and Riccardo Gini, as well as the Biblioteca degli Alberi (Library of Trees), highlighting the difficulties involved in selecting tree species that are more resilient to climate change and in finding space in densely built urban centers.

The article then broadens its scope to other European cities — Barcelona and Paris in particular — where administrators and urban planners are experimenting with similar strategies (superblocks, “green axes,” de-paving, climate shelters) to address increasingly frequent and lethal heat waves, painting an overall picture of a continent forced to rapidly rethink its cities around three ancient allies against the heat: water, soil, and shade.
