The documentary, produced by The Blink Fish (directed by Stefano Santamato and produced by Paolo Soravia), explores – through in-depth features and interviews with the key figures involved – the development of a building that has now become a new architectural icon in Eindhoven’s skyline.

The documentary has also won “Best Cinematography” and “Best Message” at Top Indie Film Awards – Spring 2024.

Designed primarily to accommodate low-income residents – such as young professionals and students – the Eindhoven tower offers apartments with affordable rents but high living quality. The complex vision of “residential” coexistence between humans and other species is amplified in this project, taking on a dual challenge: bringing together the global fight against the environmental crisis with the urgent need for affordable housing in contemporary cities.

Trudo Vertical Forest houses on its 75 meters high 135 trees of various species, to which are added about 8500 shrubs and small plants; the apartments have a small limited surface (less than 50 square meters), while having the spatial extension offered by the terraces, where the presence of trees and shrubs helps to regulate the microclimate and clean the air.

Designed to accommodate mainly low-income tenants – such as young professionals and students – the Eindhoven tower houses apartments with low rents but high housing quality. The complex vision of “living” coexistence between man and other species is thus amplified in the project into a dual challenge: the possibility of combining the great challenge of the environmental crisis with the urgent need for affordable housing in contemporary cities.
After the first prototype in Milan (2014), Trudo Vertical Forest now makes the Vertical Forest typology accessible to everyone, setting new housing standards for social housing.
The documentary by The Blink Fish (directed by Stefano Santamato and produced by Paolo Soravia) recounts – through insights and interviews with the protagonists of the project – the development of the building which now has become a new architectural icon of the Eindhoven skyline.

From the history of the Strijp-S neighborhood, a former industrial area now redeveloped, to the neighborhood’s current creative vocation, the documentary outlines Trudo Vertical Forest’s role as a landmark in the area; special attention is paid to the architectural and technological innovations, as well as environmental innovations, related to the design development and construction of the building: prefabrication and the study of greenery have made it possible to significantly reduce the construction costs of the project, making it economically accessible to low-income segments of the population. Nowadays, Trudo Vertical Forest is a unique project on the international architectural scene, receiving several awards after only one year of it’s completion, including  the Sustainable Cities and Human Settlements Award (2022) and the 23rd Energy Globe Award (2022).

On October 3rd, at the opening of the session, Stefano Boeri dialogues with Norman Foster, Jean Todd, Susan Aitken – Leader of Glasgow City Council – and Doris Andoni – chairman of the UNECE Committee on Urban Development, Housing and Land Management – on the relationship between urban macro-policies and the design practice of architects and urban planners.

In the context of the event, then, Stefano Boeri, Norman Foster and representatives of the San Marino Union of Architects and Engineers perform the symbolic act of signing the San Marino Declaration, based on the principles of sustainable and inclusive urban design and architecture in support of sustainable, safe, healthy and socially inclusive housing, urban infrastructures and cities.

The report focuses on the impact of the project in the Porta Nuova area, praising its urban regeneration aspects, and on the typology, with a look at the choice of plants – 800 trees, 15,000 plants and 5,000 shrubs – and the characteristic elements of this successful example of urban forestation, increasingly necessary to respond to contemporary climate challenges.

” On one side, biodiversity will help us to strengthen immune system, on the other side, one of the ways to reverse global warming is to multiply the number of trees inside our cities,” says Stefano Boeri.

The new urban and landscape intervention proposes to restore the social and environmental value of Cagliari’s seafront by means of a green promenade that recaptures the original 19th-century function of Via Roma. Starting from the Cagliari tradition of tree-lined avenues, the project defines a continuous, pedestrian and shaded public space that functions as a ‘green lung’ and connector element, both longitudinally between the FFSS station and Piazza Ingrao, and transversely – between the city and the sea.

The masterplan also includes as suggestions a footbridge connecting Piazza Ingrao with the old port, renewed in its primary structures, and an intermodal transit hub near the railway station.
