In an article on the Milano Città Stato website, the New Policlinico Hospital project (Boeri Studio) is mentioned in relation to the urban transformation of Milan, with the rooftops being described as the new public squares.
It highlights the growing trend of enhancing elevated spaces for meeting, wellbeing and socialising, and cites the New Policlinico Hospital in Milan as an example, where the Roof Garden is one of the main urban forestry projects planned for the city.
Situated in Milan’s historic centre, the Policlinico is one of the city’s major hospitals, comprising a healthcare citadel surrounded by a perimeter within which various services are housed in separate buildings connected by mostly external walkways.
The New Policlinico Hospital project introduces a large ‘container’, the Central Building, into the central area, which houses the medical/surgical and maternity/paediatric wards. This consists of two buildings in line, intended for hospital wards and clinics.
Added to these is a central block housing operating theatres and delivery/labour rooms. Initially reserved for patients and staff from the various departments, the lush hanging garden on its roof covers over 7,000 square metres and may be opened to the public in the future for special recreational and therapeutic events.
