On September 5 and 6, the international conference WATERLINES – Research, Projects and Visions for the Connection between Cities and Waterfronts takes place in Ancona, with the participation of Sara Gangemi, Head of the Landscape Department at Stefano Boeri Architetti.
The event, organized by DICEA – Department of Construction, Civil Engineering and Architecture, UNIVPM, Department of Excellence and the Hub for Heritage and Habitat (H4HH) Research Group, focuses on the evolving relationship between urban environments and port areas. Topics include the regeneration of port infrastructures, the reuse of abandoned or obsolete maritime spaces, and new strategies to reestablish connections between cities and their waterfronts.
In this context, Sara Gangemi takes part in Session 2 – Landscape, where she presents some of the studio’s most significant projects, including A Green Promenade for Cagliari’s Waterfront. The project envisions the redevelopment of Via Roma’s seafront promenade, an intervention on the Port front, and the redesign of Piazza Matteotti.
This new urban and landscape intervention restores the social and environmental value of Cagliari’s waterfront through a green promenade that revives the original 19th-century function of Via Roma. Drawing inspiration from Cagliari’s tradition of tree-lined boulevards, the project creates a continuous, pedestrian, and shaded public space that acts as both a “green lung” and a connective element—longitudinally, between the railway station and Piazza Ingrao, and transversally, linking the city to the sea.
