The Mediterranean is a climate hot-spot in which the criticalities already evident on a global scale are even getting stronger. And they will do much harm. Italy will therefore be the first victim: we must expect a greater frequency and intensity of extreme events, which will then lead to flooding, with consequent damage to infrastructures, urban settlements, ecosystems, and an increased risk of loss of life. Sea rise and increased frequency of storm surges will cause flooding of coastal areas, which will result in very high damage to people and ecosystems, also due to the increased exposure of people living near the coast. “We have a choice. Collective action or collective suicide.” Starting from this dramatic statement by UN Secretary General António Guterres, the topic of climate change is addressed here by focusing on crucial causes and symptoms of the ongoing emergency. From the disappearance of glaciers to the threats to Venice, from delays in renewable energies to new challenges for the economy, in the wake of the recent disasters in the Marmolada and Marche regions, Giuseppe Caporale pursues his narrative with journalistic clarity and the eagerness to understand that – in the end – this destiny unites us all and that this countdown towards the possible apocalypse calls us to a new assumption of responsibility and awareness.
