Stefano Boeri a Vision Marine

On Friday, May 17th at 6:30 PM, the Maimeri Foundation and the Milano Painting Academy present the third meeting of the “Drawn Concepts” series, titled “Marine Visions: Beyond the Horizon in Stefano Boeri’s Architecture,” featuring Stefano Boeri.

The event explores the imagery of Stefano Boeri and his studio, from research on the Mediterranean as “Solid Sea” to coastal projects worldwide, in a discussion on the connection between art and architecture.

The relationship between the sea, the coast, and architecture is prominent in the projects of Stefano Boeri Architetti, such as the Masterplans for the Cagliari Waterfront or for the Southern Salerno Coast, where the project focuses on the de-artificialization of the coast, through the enhancement of a 270-hectare pine forest, requalified and integrated with new ecological corridors along the river channels, to improve landscape quality and contain the expansion of urban areas.

But the theme has also been studied for the project of the Villa Méditerranée in Marseille, conceived by Boeri Studio on the occasion of Marseille’s proclamation as the European Capital of Culture in 2013. The building stands on the coast, near the harbor, with the Tourette promontory behind it, rising from a square of seawater that penetrates the quay, symbolizing the deep connection with the sea, visible only once inside its basin. Seen from the promontory, the building appears to rise like an island, while if viewed from the sea, it gives the impression of resting on the mainland. The architecture’s form is characterized by an imposing overhang of 36 meters, which, in addition to overlooking the square, seems to want to surpass the outer breakwater with its projection. However, Villa Méditerranée does not seek to overcome the sea but to incorporate it, as revealed by the longitudinal section showing the existence of two basement levels.
