The IoArch website has published an article on the occasion of the inauguration in Brescia of A Hope Called Work: Two Doors Open Between Prison and City by Stefano Boeri Architetti, developed within the framework of the international initiative Porte della Speranza (Gates of Hope), promoted by the Pontifical Foundation Gravissimum Educationis of the Dicastery for Culture and Education of the Holy See.
The Gate of Hope consists of two installations: one inside the panopticon of the prison, where it becomes a permanent interface dedicated to job opportunities, and the other outdoors, in Piazza Arnaldo, where information about prison life is shared with the public through a videowall.
The two doors activate a dual movement— from the city toward the prison and from the prison toward the city—allowing the circulation of information, opportunities, projects, and aspirations beyond institutional boundaries. While respecting the rules of the penitentiary system, the project introduces a tangible and symbolic infrastructure of hope, transforming architecture into a tool for awareness, responsibility, and social inclusion.
“I believe that a serious prospect of reintegration into the job market and vocational training represents, for an inmate, one of the most compelling reasons to imagine themselves beyond the condition of imprisonment; the only ones truly capable of offering hope for a return to social life that is not merely an interval between two periods of detention, but a life perspective involving study, training, and professional activity. There are two doors, but the Door of Hope is one,” says Stefano Boeri.
