Domus Aurea in Il Giornale dell'architettura

The industry website Il Giornale dell’Architettura has published an article dedicated to accessible archaeological walks in Rome, which also features the new entrance to the Domus Aurea, designed by Stefano Boeri Architetti.

Discovered at the end of the 15th century and made famous by its grotesque decorations, the Neronian Domus is an underground site within the Colosseum Archaeological Park. The intervention represents an extraordinary opportunity—promoted by the Colosseum Archaeological Park and produced by Electa—to return one of the most evocative realities of Roman history to the city. It allows every visitor to descend into the heart of Nero’s villa, gradually discovering the layers of history and the beauty of the underground spaces, while admiring, during the gradual descent, the original vaults above and the traces of the Trajanic bath structures.

The project is conceived as a narrative path articulated in three stages (the Vestibule, the Milky Way, and the Landing), which connects the park of Colle Oppio with the ancient floor level of the Octagonal Hall, located about 6 meters below the entrance level from the park.
The intervention, which weaves its way among the ruins while lightly touching them, is completely autonomous and self-supporting with respect to the existing masonry, ensuring total respect for the context in which it is inserted.
