Issue 187 of the magazine Arketipo provides an in-depth analysis of the New Policlinico Hospital, a project developed by Techint S.p.A. (parent company and general coordination, structures and systems), Boeri Studio (S. Boeri, G. Barreca, G. La Varra) (architectural design), B.T.C. srl (medical logistics), Land s.r.l. (green area design), TRT Trasporti e Territorio s.r.l. (mobility).
The New Policlinico Hospital in Milan is one of the largest hospital construction sites in Europe and represents a new concept in healthcare facility design. The future Policlinico has been designed to integrate clinical functions, advanced research, social relations and environmental protection. The hospital is intended to serve as a model of contemporary hospital architecture, where well-being, technology and sustainability are integrated within a single system.
While maintaining part of the original pavilion structure, the design for the New Policlinico Hospital incorporates a substantial ‘container’ in the central area, designated the Central Building, which integrates the medical/surgical and maternity/paediatric wards.
The roof will feature a lush hanging garden covering over 7,000 square metres, initially reserved for patients and staff from the various departments, but which may be opened to the public in the future for special recreational and therapeutic events. Among the main urban forestry projects planned for Milan, the Roof Garden is set to benefit from the added value of the chromotherapy potential of its landscape, which is subject to seasonal colour changes. The site also comprises a rehabilitation garden, which is criss-crossed by paths of varying levels of difficulty, linked to different types of paving.
