Inside La Repubblica, an article by Alessandra Corica presents an update on the construction site of the New Policlinico Hospital in Milan, a project by Boeri Studio, walking through the new interior spaces.
The article begins with a description of the project, located in the area next to the historic Ca’ Granda complex. At the final stage of construction, the central building will feature on its roof a lush hanging garden of over 7,000 square meters. Initially, its use will be reserved for patients and healthcare staff from the various departments, but in the future, it may be opened to the public for special events with recreational and therapeutic purposes. The logic of exchange between the hospital and the city, already present on the ground floor, also extends to the green square on the roof of the Central Building. This space is also designed to host special entertainment initiatives for patients and staff, but also for the external public, promoted by various cultural and social institutions of the city that have an established collaboration with the Policlinico Foundation, such as the Sormani Library, the Conservatory, the MuBa, or the Società Umanitaria.
The article then presents the interior spaces: “Here are the 125-meter-long corridors, with rooms opening onto the blue-painted walls—two-bed rooms with private bathrooms (converted into single rooms in the ‘postpartum’ ward, intended for new mothers)—and LED lighting that follows the circadian rhythm, to respect patients’ sleep-wake cycles. Then there are the lounges for families, the 270-seat auditorium […] The hospital will continue to have 800 beds, while increasing healthcare activity by 60 percent thanks to outpatient services.”
