designboom has dedicated an article to the Wonderwoods Vertical Forest, a vertical forest developed in the heart of Utrecht by Stefano Boeri Architetti, as part of the urban regeneration plan for Beurskwartier — the new pedestrian area adjacent to the Central Station.
Wonderwoods Vertical Forest is part of a two-tower development, designed in collaboration with MVSA Architects. The tower by Stefano Boeri Architetti is a constantly evolving habitat, composed of 360 trees and 50,000 plants distributed across terraces and balconies.
“Our Vertical Forest in Utrecht represents a fundamental stage in the research we are conducting all over the world,” says Stefano Boeri. “The building hosts significant plant biodiversity and a wide range of functions, including exhibition, commercial, office, and residential spaces, as well as hospitality options. It will be a true building/city and a rich, complex ecosystem.”
The building, which opened in early 2025, includes around 200 apartments of various types designed for a diverse range of residents, along with commercial spaces, sports and leisure areas, and dining venues.
Culturally, the Wonderwoods Vertical Forest introduces a new chapter in the landscape of contemporary European architecture. It represents a significant experiment in the “demineralization” of vertical architectural surfaces, while also serving as a new urban landmark for Utrecht — thanks to its strategic central location and its inclusive, multifunctional design intended to welcome all citizens.
