Cagliari Today devotes an article to the worsening situation of heatwaves and drought affecting the Sardinian city, proposing tree planting and urban forestry as a solution to the problem—such as in the case of Stefano Boeri Architetti’s project A Green Promenade for the Cagliari Waterfront, currently under development.
The new urban and landscape intervention aims to restore the social and environmental value of Cagliari’s waterfront through a green promenade that revives the original 19th-century function of Via Roma. Drawing inspiration from Cagliari’s tradition of tree-lined boulevards, the project envisions a continuous, pedestrian, and shaded public space that acts as a “green lung” and a connecting element—both longitudinally, between the FFSS Station and Piazza Ingrao, and transversally, between the city and the sea.
In this way, the new promenade initiates the creation of a new park and open space for the city, becoming a connecting feature between the waterfront and the main public functions that face it, enhancing the entire area from a cultural, social, and environmental perspective.
“Trees are not just natural umbrellas. They absorb CO₂, filter pollution, and reduce the heat island effect. Planting thousands of them, in every corner of the city, would mean not just surviving, but living better,” says Stefano Boeri.
