Andrea Illy‘s new book, La Società Rigenerativa (The Regenerative Society), features a contribution by Stefano Boeri in the section titled ‘Esseri Urbani‘ (Urban Beings).
In the book, Illy, an entrepreneur and co-chairman of the Regenerative Society Foundation (an association created to promote a new model of regenerative socio-economic development), shares the results of years of research and reflection. He explains why it is possible to imagine and build an economy that does more than just reduce damage; an economy that is capable of rebuilding the natural capital we need today.
The book La società rigenerativa stems from the awareness that without regeneration, sustainability alone perpetuates the status quo, whereas regeneration renews its foundations.
Through eighteen chapters and dozens of interviews with pioneers of regeneration, he explores the frontiers of a revolution already underway. Illy documents with scientific precision how companies that adopt regenerative practices are systematically outperforming traditional ones: renewable energy sources now cost less than fossil fuels, and cities designed for people create cascading benefits for society as a whole.
The question the author seeks to answer is not whether transformation is possible, but what we must do to make it tangible for everyone.
In “Esseri Urbani”, Stefano Boeri illustrates the regeneration of the Porta Nuova district and the buildings that make up the complex, including the Vertical Forest (Boeri Studio, 2014), a metropolitan reforestation project that contributes to environmental regeneration and urban biodiversity without expanding the city into the surrounding area.
