Within The Contemporary Garden, published by Phaidon, the Bosco Verticale in Milan, designed by Boeri Studio, is featured.
The book showcases 300 exceptional gardens located in over forty countries worldwide. Curated in collaboration with an international team of horticultural experts, the collection includes global examples such as the High Line and Changi Airport Garden, as well as private gems like the dreamy hillside garden in Morocco by Umberto Pasti and Anna Wintour’s elegant garden in upstate New York, designed by Miranda Brooks.
Organized alphabetically by designer or studio name, the book reveals a wide range of contemporary garden styles – naturalistic, community, wild, urban, botanical, dry, topiary, minimalist, edible, flower-filled, and more – demonstrating how our evolving aesthetic and horticultural sensibility fosters an ever-deeper connection with the natural world.
In this context, the Bosco Verticale is presented as a unique example of urban biodiversity, hosting vegetation equivalent to approximately five hectares of flat woodland, concentrated on a surface area of only about 1,000 square meters – fifty times smaller. The environmental benefits are numerous: absorption of fine dust and CO₂, oxygen production, optimized water management, reduced noise pollution, and an overall improvement in quality of life – for people, plants, and animals alike.
