Angés Zamboni publishes an article in L’Eventail entitled Le Renouveau de l’architecture et du design égyptien (The Renewal of Egyptian Architecture and Design), mentioning the Cairo Vertical Forest project (Stefano Boeri Architetti; Shimaa Shalash, local partner).

The article traces the evolution of architecture in Egypt, showing how the country, while drawing inspiration from Western models, remains deeply connected to its cultural roots. This has given rise to an original design language that is now recognized internationally. Within this perspective of renewing the urban landscape and promoting more sustainable cities, several projects embodying this vision are presented.

Among these, the new buildings of the Cairo Vertical Forest designed by Stefano Boeri Architetti and Shimaa Shalash as local partner, for New Cairo in Egypt, are three cubes 30 metres high and deep, housing a functional mix of residences and commercial spaces. With 350 trees and over 14,000 shrubs and evergreens belonging to 100 different species – about a third of those existing today within Cairo’s urban fabric – the cubes reflect the design philosophy of the Vertical Forest, integrating living nature into the architectural design.

The three New Cairo Vertical Forests are part of the broader Greener Cairo vision, which includes six demineralisation strategies for the Egyptian metropolis aimed at achieving the ecological conversion of the city. These include green architecture, a campaign to green the city’s thousands of flat roofs, and increasing urban vegetation by creating a system of green corridors that cross the old capital and connect to a larger orbital forest, making Egypt the first country in North Africa to tackle the major challenge of climate change and ecological conversion.
