Frieze has published an article by James Lawrence Slattery dedicated to the main events of the Manchester International Festival, including The Playmaker, an installation by Stefano Boeri Architetti.
This year’s festival theme, “Dream Differently,” invites the public to respond in new and creative ways to the physical and political worlds we inhabit. The programme includes concerts, dance, painting, theatre, and both art and sound installations. Among the highlights is Football City, Art United, an initiative that aims to connect art and football, developed by Factory International in collaboration with former footballer Juan Mata, curator Hans Ulrich Obrist, and writer/director Josh Willdigg.
In this context, which brings together 11 artists and 11 footballers, the initiative develops into The Playmaker, conceived by Stefano Boeri Architetti in collaboration with Sandro Mazzola, a legendary figure in Italian football known for embodying the spirit of the game through his creativity and determination.
Open to the public from July 4 to August 24, the work draws inspiration from the industrial character of its venue, aligning with its aesthetic to create an intense, identity-driven football environment. Positioned as the focal point of the exhibition, the installation stands at the center of 11 other football-themed works, reinforcing its role as the main attraction and engaging visitors in an interactive journey through the iconic roles of the sport.
