Francesca Cesa Bianchi, Partner at Stefano Boeri Architetti, participates in the sixth episode of the Building Architecture Culture Public Programme, which accompanies Albania’s participation in the 19th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia.

This series is comprised of a series of conversations held within the Albanian pavilion. A group of interdisciplinary guests participate in these conversations, where they discuss and explore Albania’s evolving architectural identity.

Curated by Anneke Abhelakh, Andi Arifaj and Adonel Myzyri, and produced in collaboration with KoozArch – a platform dedicated to architectural debate and research in the field of design – Building Architecture Culture was created with the aim of extending the conversations initiated within the pavilion beyond the confines of the Biennale.

The episode, entitled Governance and Design, is moderated by Federica Sofia Zambeletti, architect and founder of KoozArch, and focuses on the non-neutral role of architecture in Albania. Albanian architecture is a political and cultural driver, exploring the tension between the use of design to drive national change and the need for sustainable and ethical urban planning.

The core issue under discussion is whether architecture in Albania can successfully balance its role as a political and governance tool with the need to establish an urban planning framework that fairly balances public interest and private ambitions.

Joining Francesca Cesa Bianchi as guests on the episode are Dorina Pojani, urban planner and Associate Professor of Urban Planning at the School of Architecture, Design and Planning at the University of Queensland in Australia, and Eled Fagu, an architect and academic.
