Inside Moneta, the economic supplement of Il Giornale, an interview by Hoara Borselli with Stefano Boeri has been published, titled: “No green choice can work if it does not take inequalities into account.”
The interview focuses on the economic and energy-related aspects of architectural design, linked to the current historical moment and the socio-spatial context. It highlights examples from projects developed by the firm Stefano Boeri Architetti, such as the Bosco Verticale (Vertical Forest), the redevelopment of the ALER public housing in Monza, and the Porta della Speranza (Gate of Hope)—a civic and symbolic architectural device aimed at redefining the relationship between the prison and the city of Brescia. The Porta della Speranza is located at the “Canton Mombello” District House, a prison complex with one of the highest overcrowding rates in Italy, and addresses a fundamental theme: work as the primary form of hope and social reintegration.
“We are in a situation where the use of renewables is mandatory. […] It is an old idea of Jeremy Rifkin, the famous American economist and visionary. He wrote a book (The Third Industrial Revolution) in which he argued, almost 20 years ago, that renewables could become the resources for the future of cities and architecture. His idea was to make every building energy-independent. He said that a housing complex, if it has a centralized renewable energy plant, can produce more energy than it needs and thus even become a form of entrepreneurship.” says Stefano Boeri.
