The Vatican press room announces the launch of the international project Le Porte della Speranza (The Doors of Hope). This initiative is promoted by the Pontifical Foundation Gravissimum Educationis, in collaboration with the Dicastery for Culture and Education. Among its protagonists is Stefano Boeri.
The initiative draws inspiration from the inaugural Door of Hope of the present Jubilee, which was inaugurated by Pope Francis in Rome’s Rebibbia prison. This symbolic gesture has now been transformed into a widespread and participatory artistic undertaking.
The project involves the creation of artistic doors inside eight Italian and two Portuguese prisons, created in collaboration between internationally renowned artists and prison communities. The works are constructed using materials such as wood, stone and metal, in a process that symbolises hope, transformation and dialogue.
The artists involved include leading figures from the cultural scene, such as Stefano Boeri, Mimmo Paladino and Mario Martone. These artists have been invited to create works that arise from listening to and engaging with prisoners, transforming places of confinement into spaces of expression and rebirth.
Cardinal José Tolentino Mendonça, Prefect of the Dicastery for Culture and Education, emphasises the profound significance of the initiative: ‘Prison is a place where hope can be restored. This is an outcome that can only be achieved through the collective contribution of all involved parties.
