Approvato Piano Strutturale di Viareggio

On Wednesday, July 30, the Municipality officially adopted the Structural Plan of the City of Viareggio, drafted by Stefano Boeri Architetti and coordinated by the municipal technical offices. The plan aims to provide a medium- to long-term vision for Viareggio, starting from the need to safeguard and enhance the city’s identity-based qualities, both environmentally and socioeconomically. Among these are the Migliarino San Rossore Massaciuccoli Natural Park ecosystem, an area of extraordinary natural value, and the shipbuilding industry, a sector in which the city is an international center of excellence.

The plan was presented on July 23, replacing the previous one from 2004 in its entirety. It introduces the idea of a city that is protected, attractive, and forward-looking — a city that is “resilient” to climate phenomena and both accessible and sustainable. It responds, first and foremost, to the municipal administration’s call to significantly reduce land consumption by limiting urban sprawl and new constructions, focusing instead on the regeneration of existing areas.

The plan aims to enhance usability, accessibility, and livability across the entire network of neighborhoods and districts. Among these is a peri-urban agricultural belt that reconnects Viareggio and Torre del Lago, promoting rural landscapes, local biodiversity, and sustainable resource management. In particular, the Plan includes environmental and landscape restoration and mitigation across 75 intervention areas, and the creation of 6 kilometers of peri-urban green buffers, with local living-oriented activities such as community gardens, markets, agricultural spaces, and educational parks.
