In the online magazine Scribehound, landscape designer and BBC Gardeners’ World presenter Arit Anderson publishes an article entitled The Forest in the Sky, about Boeri Studio’s Vertical Forest project.

The article describes the project built in Milan’s Porta Nuova area. It consists of two towers, one 80 metres high and the other 112 metres, with a total of 800 trees (480 of which are first or second size, and 300 are smaller), as well as 15,000 perennials and/or ground cover plants and 5,000 shrubs. This is the equivalent of 30,000 square metres of forest and undergrowth concentrated within 3,000 square metres of urban space.

“On average, each tenant has two trees, eight shrubs, and forty plants within their space,” writes Anderson.

Unlike ‘mineral’ façades made of glass or stone, the Bosco’s vegetal screen does not reflect or amplify the sun’s rays, but filters them to generate a cosy indoor microclimate that has no harmful environmental impact. At the same time, the green curtain ‘regulates’ humidity, produces oxygen and absorbs CO₂ and fine dust. This combination of features has earned the project several prestigious awards, including the International Highrise Award from the Deutsches Architekturmuseum in Frankfurt (2014) and the CTBUH Award for the world’s best tall building, presented by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago (2015).
