The Sa Casa project, developed by Stefano Boeri Architetti for Entidad Estatal de Vivienda, Casa 47 in Ibiza, is organised into four residential volumes accommodating around 190 apartments, revolving to a shared open green space as the heart of collective life. The intervention is characterised by a high degree of typological diversity and a modular organisation that facilitates the adaptability of the residential units to universal accessibility requirements.

Modularity is the organising principle of the intervention: the residential units are designed as flexible spaces that can be reconfigured over time, adapting to different needs and users — young people, families and people with reduced mobility — while ensuring full accessibility. The same system makes it possible to redefine the relationship between homes, shared workspaces and common areas without compromising the overall architectural identity, allowing the complex to evolve alongside the needs of its inhabitants. The layout stems from the ambition to create a permeable and inclusive place capable of engaging with the city and fostering community through a fragmented and modular composition: not a compact block, but a system of buildings that defines courtyards, pathways and a central public square dedicated to meeting and social interaction.

A key element of the construction strategy is the use of CLT structural timber, a technology that combines environmental sustainability, construction precision and speed of execution. The high degree of prefabrication and the use of timber reduce construction time, waste and impacts on the urban context, while also improving safety and cost control.

Energy efficiency, finally, guides the entire project: natural cross-ventilation, the correct orientation of the buildings, green roofs and photovoltaic panels contribute to residential comfort, renewable energy generation and microclimate mitigation, while rainwater collection and greywater reuse systems reduce resource consumption.

The environmental value of the project is further strengthened by the landscape design, inspired by Mediterranean ecosystems. Native vegetation, distributed across courtyards, pathways and roofs, is not merely decorative but acts as ecological infrastructure: it improves air quality, mitigates the urban heat island effect and creates shaded and welcoming spaces.

Sa Casa represents a commitment to accessible contemporary architecture designed for affordable rental housing. It integrates technology, nature and wellbeing, aligning with European decarbonisation goals and offering a concrete and replicable response to the challenges posed by climate change.

Stefano Boeri Architetti’s project for the expansion of the Mancini Pastificio Agricolo unfolds in a place where agriculture and architecture converge: a pasta factory immersed in wheat fields, where the entire production chain, from cultivation to processing, takes place on the same site, following the rhythms of the seasons rather than those of industry.

The intervention is conceived in dialogue with the existing building, a semi-underground facility from 2010, renovated in 2017 by architect Ernesto Paoletti. The new project takes the form of an addition to this structure, extending over an area of approximately 4,710 sqm and responding to the company’s new production and logistics needs: it houses pasta packaging, automated storage, and loading/unloading areas, as well as new offices and a retail space on the first floor. Alongside this expansion comes a shift in paradigm: from a linear sequence of functional spaces to a settlement principle organized around a central open space. The new volumes are set into the hillside, rotating in relation to the existing building to adapt to the natural slope, reducing the visual impact on the agricultural landscape and optimizing production flows.

The approach to the building is conceived as a progressive discovery: the structure gradually reveals itself to the eye, embedded within the morphology of the terrain. The compositional design is completed by a vertical totem marking the entrance and counterbalancing the horizontality of the volumes, becoming a visual landmark for the entire complex.

The relationship with the landscape is a central element of the project: rows of cherry trees line the building, creating a shaded natural portico, while the green roofs of the pergolas reinterpret the hilly landscape in architectural terms, evoking the agricultural tradition of tree rows as elements of separation and crop rotation.

The choice of materials also reflects this dialogue between new and existing. The two pre-existing façades — one with wooden brise-soleil, the other in exposed concrete — are clad in wooden sunscreens, which engage with the original architecture while marking its temporal distance. The new façades, by contrast, are made of textured, pigmented precast thermal-insulated concrete panels in red tones that recall the color of the earth and shift with the changing light throughout the day. This red is echoed in the entrance totem and the access area, acting as a chromatic thread that unites the different parts of the complex.

The project by Stefano Boeri Architetti aims to regenerate a crucial urban node in Rome, through the architectural recovery of the former ATAC depot and the integration of new green spaces and public amenities. In a predominantly residential neighbourhood, the Depositi delle Vittorie is transformed into a multifunctional space, creating a new pole of attraction for residents, at the heart of the Prati-Delle Vittorie district.

Within a 16,000 sqm area, the project proposes a variety of commercial, cultural and leisure activities: a multifunctional hub where creative spaces coexist with retail and hospitality uses and, above all, with greenery.

Among the most significant aspects of the project, a 8,000 sqm roof garden, suspended at 15 metres above ground, offers a green outlook over the streets and pedestrian plazas below.

On the ground floor, a public courtyard hosts leisure spaces, integrating with the existing urban fabric and creating, together with the roof garden, a system of two tree-lined plazas. While on the ground floor the inner courtyard of the former Depot opens up to the city, on the second floor the roof garden is reinterpreted in a contemporary key as an exhibition space for sculptures set within greenery. Conceived as a labyrinthine pathway, the roof garden invites visitors to discover artistic installations in a natural setting, generating a plurality of views that will merge with the landscape of the neighbourhood and the nearby hill of Monte Mario.

The integration of plants and trees in an area of Rome characterised by a strongly mineral quality contributes significantly to increasing biodiversity and regulating the local microclimate, creating a more comfortable environment for residents. The landscape has been designed to be dynamic and in continuous transformation, featuring square groves and panoramic terraces, while the “green rooms”, with their variety of heights and tones, are configured as true vegetal sculptures, capable of offering visitors diversified experiences as the seasons change.

The selection of plant species reflects the botanical tradition of Rome and the surrounding countryside, while adapting to the new climatic conditions of the Mediterranean urban environment.

The project by Stefano Boeri Architetti for the Depositi delle Vittorie thus represents an innovative and sustainable urban regeneration intervention, uniting the architectural and the landscaping dimensions, and creating a dialogue between the historical past of the neighbourhood and the contemporary needs of its inhabitants.

The project presented by Stefano Boeri Architetti for the MIND area, commissioned by the Archdiocese of Milan, is conceived with the intent of creating a place capable of integrating spiritual life and interfaith dialogue.

The new Monastery is developed over a total area of 2,700 m², with 1,100 m² allocated to open spaces, establishing itself as an attractive hub not only for the future residents of the MIND area and the nearby district of Cascina Merlata, but for all worshippers and citizens of the greater Milan metropolitan area.

Inspired by the Christian monastic tradition, the project reinterprets the archetype of the cloister as both a spatial and symbolic device: an introverted yet permeable space, articulated around three fundamental dimensions — care, dialogue, and spiritual inquiry.

The triangular-plan Cloister, positioned at the intersection of the two axes of the Cardo and the Decumanus of the MIND area, opens itself to the flow of citizens and worshippers who, inspired by their religious communities, will tend to the Garden of Religions and its plantings.

The Cloister is enclosed by an open colonnade along the sides of the Cardo and the Decumanus, embracing the Garden and extending northward to form a large ascending Sail, within whose space the main nave of the new Pastoral House opens, rising toward the north and housing the altar at its apex.

The new Church, with its triagonal plan and liturgical spaces, is designed to accommodate up to 300–350 worshippers, and is complemented by spaces for community activities.

In architectural terms, the church is developed as a material continuation of the cloister roof, defined by an ascending gesture that recalls the forms of the Milan Cathedral — as though the great Sail housing the new Pastoral House descends with its projections to embrace the Cloister of Religions and enclose it within its perimeter colonnades.

At the heart of this embrace sits the trapezoidal, transparent prism of the Library of Religions which, dedicated to study and learning, fosters interaction among the disciplines and religious traditions that characterise the civic fabric of Milan.

Within it, the programme includes study rooms, an open-air amphitheatre, multipurpose spaces, and a section dedicated to pastoral care, with five attached residences.

On the rooftop, the Library hosts, among the cherry trees of a small grove, a selection of sculptures from the storage collections of the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo — as though, having descended from the Cathedral’s spires, the statues wished to mingle with, and welcome, the visitors and worshippers ascending from the Library of Religions below.

A gesture of openness, intended to make a historic heritage collection — otherwise largely inaccessible — available to the wider public.

The new Tirana General Directorate of Road Transport Services (D.P.SH.T.RR.) headquarters, designed by Stefano Boeri Architetti, is located in the north-western quadrant of the city, along the Lana River that crosses and structures the urban fabric. The building—a compact cubic volume—stands in continuity with the studio’s two other interventions in the Blloku district, Blloku Cube, already completed, and Domus Cube, currently under construction, consolidating a recognizable and coherent architectural language.

Here too, the character of the building is defined both by its form and by the façade, conceived as a solid skin punctuated by geometric openings—rectangles and semicircles—that frame views, ensure privacy, and introduce a dynamic rhythm that modulates natural light within the interior spaces.

The project involves the reconstruction of the D.P.SH.T.RR. headquarters, reorganizing and modernizing the workspaces while integrating new functions open to the city: exhibition areas dedicated to vintage cars, leisure spaces, an auditorium, and conference rooms. The building thus takes shape not only as an administrative seat but as a civic infrastructure for the community.

The first floor accommodates dining areas, event rooms, and the first offices, while the upper levels host executive and operational environments organized in flexible open-plan layouts to encourage communication between departments.

At the heart of the project lies the central green patio, a full-height space covered by a skylight that can be mechanically opened to allow solar exposure and natural irrigation. Three tall trees, together with dozens of shrubs and bushes, transform the courtyard into a bioclimatic device that strengthens the dialogue between the working environment and living nature: in summer it promotes cross-ventilation and natural cooling, while in winter it contributes to heat accumulation and improved indoor comfort. On the roof, photovoltaic panels help meet the building’s energy demand, reinforcing its strategy of self-sufficiency and environmental sustainability.

The new Tirana D.P.SH.T.RR. headquarters thus interprets the theme of the contemporary public building as an open, efficient, and permeable space, where functional innovation, environmental quality, and the presence of nature are integrated into a compact architecture capable of generating urban and social relationships.

Stefano Boeri Architetti’s project for the redevelopment of the former Bank of Italy in Cremona envisages the regeneration of the historic building, built in the 1950s based on a design by Luigi Vagnetti, and then decommissioned in 2009. The architecture, overlooking Piazza Stradivari, recalls the architecture of the Banks of Italy of the period and evokes the image of a fortress, closed and introverted; today it constitutes a fundamental backdrop to the layout of the Piazza as well as being particularly recognisable within the urban context. Now stripped of its former function, the building today lacks a direct relationship with the city and a real connection with the public space.

For this reason, the design principles behind the project intervention, see on the one hand a redevelopment that takes into account the value of the pre-existing buildings, in full respect of their strongly consolidated character, and on the other hand the energy efficiency of the structure and its reconnection with the city, thanks to the creation of a green courtyard on the interior, and the use of the portico, on the exterior, for collective functions – literally opening the building to interaction with the city.

The only demolition involved in the project is the removal of the volume inside the courtyard, where the credit office counters and the large customer waiting room accessible from Via Verdi were originally located. In this way, the project enables the original C-shaped layout of the building to be opened up and, in addition to reducing land consumption to zero, it makes a previously covered area permeable, transforming a large area into a true open inner courtyard.

The building consisted of four floors above ground, with an attic floor on the roof, as well as a basement level and a sub-basement where the bank’s vault and sub-caveau were located. Maintaining the maximum ridge height unchanged and intervening only on the slope of the pitched roof, the project obtains an additional habitable floor, for a total of five floors above ground, four of which are used as free-standing residences. The layout of the interiors is redesigned with the aim of obtaining four/five flats per floor, all of which have a double view of the exterior and the internal courtyard. As far as the ground floor is concerned, the design solution proposes to glaze the portico, which in fact constitutes the point of contact between the building and Piazza Stradivari and which over time has lost its function as a monumental entrance, in order to exploit its potential for public and semi-public activities and as a space usable by the city. At the same level, the spaces available are partly intended to host common activities.

Bounding the current building, at the top, an imposing roof cornice crowns all the façades and outlines the perimeter of the pitched roof. The project proposes the preservation of the current loggia and the cornice that surmounts it, but envisages the redesigning of the geometry of the existing pitch through the insertion of shading systems for the terraces, with a view to an overall preservation of the building’s image in its solidity and integrity. Furthermore, the roofing project envisages covering the surface with photovoltaic panels whose colour has been purposely sampled from the pre-existing context, again to favour integration within the historic centre. At the same time, the photovoltaic surface is able to cover 50 per cent of the building’s energy needs, with a view to reducing environmental impact. The same approach is adopted for the external façades, originally covered with large slabs of pink stone, which are entirely preserved; on the external façades, the interventions include the enhancement of the verticality of the holes and splays that adorn the existing windows.

The internal façades, on the other hand, are redesigned to accommodate new open spaces, loggias and terraces: a new, light metal structure draws a pattern of full and empty spaces, guaranteeing a high level of natural lighting of the internal spaces and at the same time enhancing the visual link between the interior and exterior of the building. The new terraces, as well as the loggias, then, thanks to a system of continuous linear vases, special planters and basins integrated into the façade, host various types of shrubs and creepers, in direct relation with the new internal green courtyard.

The plant component in this case acts as a filter between the interior and the exterior: on the one hand it connotes the space of the courtyard, on the other hand it is also visible from the side streets, with the aesthetic and environmental advantages this brings for the whole area. In particular, it acts as an acoustic barrier, regulates the microclimate in the courtyard, implements local biodiversity and, together with the fixed shading system created by the balconies, reduces glare and the ‘heat island’ effect.

Overall, Stefano Boeri Architetti’s project, in line with the studio’s design approach and previous architectural and urban redevelopment experience, aims to give the former Banca d’Italia building in Cremona added value, both functional and environmental, starting from the principles of reducing land consumption, redevelopment of the building, energy adaptation and enhancement of its relationship with its context. Maintaining a strong relationship with the historical pre-existence, the project preserves its formal external appearance, opening up in the internal courtyard the revisitation of the façades, in a contemporary key.

Bosconavigli is the residential complex designed by Stefano Boeri Architetti with Arassociati and AG&P greenscape, in Milan’s San Cristoforo neighborhood, a junction between the city and the riverside territory of the Ticino and the Alzaia del Naviglio di Porta Ticinese.

Inserted within the urban vision for Milan that foresees the dismissal of freight yards, the overcoming of infrastructural barriers between neighborhoods, new Urban Reforestation interventions and the improvement of the quality of public spaces, the project represents a pivotal element between the highly built-up fabric of the city and one of its historic districts, characterized by low-density buildings and a widespread presence of greenery.

At the architectural level, the building incorporates and revises the typology of the courtyard house, typical of the Lombard tradition; the volume has a spiral progression that allows exploiting the progressive variation in heights (up to a maximum of 11 levels) to create green terraces with the aim of encouraging and maximizing the use of open spaces, both public and private, and the relationship with the surrounding natural context.

On the one hand, Bosconavigli is characterized by the presence of 170 trees, of 60 different species, along with shrubs and climbing plants, arranged on facades, roofs, roof gardens, balconies and loggias. On the other hand, the project is placed at the center of a system of greenery and public pathways: around the building are developed both a 3500-square-meter park for condominium use, hosting functions related to sports and recreational activities, and the redevelopment of a public area of more than 7,800 square meters and the future Linear Park along the route of the decommissioned railway. In this perspective, special attention was paid to the presence of a large solitary elm tree, a historical symbol of the area, around which it was decided to develop the volume of the building.

On the ground floor, the network of flows and paths, thanks to the numerous entrances on Via San Cristoforo, makes it easy to access the different areas of the building. Here, and in a portion of the second floor, various functions are located, including a wellness facility with a swimming pool, gym and sauna.

All of Bosconavigli’s 90 apartments, ranging in size from 45 to over 300 square meters, include large outdoor spaces, conceived as an extension of the indoor ones, true “outdoor rooms.” Loggias and terraces in addition to ensuring a high quality of living are also the main element in the design of the elevations, articulated from the orientation: the facades that insist on the internal courtyard are characterized by a weave of loggias, an interplay of solids and voids designed to protect from summer sunlight and encourage winter sunlight; the facades that dialogue with the urban fabric, on the other hand, are marked by an irregular alternating system of balconies, developed to accommodate plants and tall trees, which provide a barrier to noise pollution and fine dust, encouraging an increase in biodiversity and a general improvement in the energy performance of the building.

Special consideration has been given to the integration of technological systems that can optimize the energy and environmental sustainability of the building, for example, the use of solar and photovoltaic panels on the roof, rainwater harvesting and recovery (all green areas will be equipped with automated irrigation systems through rainwater recovery), and geothermal energy production.

Overall, for its environmental value, the project represents a new way of inhabiting the city, with a view to increasing integration between living nature and architecture. Together with the Ca’delle Alzaie (Treviso) and Palazzo Verde (Antwerp) projects, Bosconavigli represents an opportunity for Stefano Boeri Architetti Architects to reimagine, in a low-density housing key, the Bosco Verticale prototype in Milan.

Integration of open and interior spaces, enhancement of greenery, dialogue with the urban context, and functional mix were the essential principles of the design approach, which was profoundly rethought during the pandemic period to address and respond in a timely manner to contemporary housing needs. Following the lockdown period, which profoundly affected daily life and habits, the design saw a profound transformation aimed at implementing the open spaces pertaining to each apartment and enhancing the character of internal flexibility as much as possible.

The Rehabilitation Center in Shenzhen, designed by Stefano Boeri Architetti together with his Chinese branch Stefano Boeri Architetti China, is a public building, entirely accessible and integrated in the urban fabric of the Longhua district, which develops pioneering concepts of social inclusion and cohesion in relation to the theme of disability, both physical and cognitive. The complex, adjacent to an urban park and directly connected to the light mobility system of the metropolis, is configured in its entirety as an ecological hill facing the natural landscape. A place of healing and inclusion immersed in greenery, whose accessibility to services and the comfort of spaces are the keys to a project that challenges conventions and opens up a new perspective on rehabilitation, going beyond the traditional concept of a facility for the mere long-term care of patients and becoming a true space of interaction and wellbeing in close contact with nature. The theme of mobility and, consequently, of accessibility plays a fundamental role in the project: the presence of underground car parks excludes the circulation of cars within the area, leaving space for ecological means of transport and green, pedestrian and collective areas, available to citizens, breaking down all architectural barriers. Soft and slow mobility is well integrated with the high-density internal circulation system.

Entirely dedicated to people with disabilities from 16 to 60 years of age, the Rehabilitation Center in Shenzhen covers a rectangular area of over 26,000 square meters, with a terraced and stepped structure designed to accommodate a large number of shrubs, healing and medicinal plants, and trees. The project specifically consists of a set of green terraces and stacked volumes, in a sustainable system of greenery, architecture and biodiversity that includes several hanging and therapeutic gardens. The green terraces consist of two types: the first – strictly related to rehabilitation – includes medical areas for light gymnastics and physiotherapy, interspersed with vegetable gardens and therapeutic gardens, in order to facilitate and improve the quality of the patients’ hospitalization. The second, on the other hand, is designed to accommodate a large number of larger shrubs and trees of different species.

Trees and plants – including aromatic and healing essences – are harmoniously arranged in the open spaces as the paths and architectural volumes vary, becoming fundamental elements of the project. The presence of living nature finds ample space in the therapeutic garden positioned on the roof, which accommodates native plant species, maintaining continuity with the adjacent public park and reinforcing the relationship between inside and outside.

The complex, with an important ecological and sustainable character designed to maximize energy efficiency, combines green systems on the roof and natural ventilation – to mitigate the building’s internal climate – with advanced renewable energy systems – such as rainwater harvesting – to meet the building’s supply needs, fostering oxygen production and mitigating CO2 emissions into the atmosphere.

The Shenzhen Rehabilitation Center encompasses multiple functions including rehabilitation, training, recreational and artistic activities, housing, museum, educational and work spaces.

Specifically, from the entrance square, in a single, continuous pathway generated around a central public and open courtyard that serves as a connection between different functional areas and uses, one can experience various realities such as the open-air rehabilitation gardens, the areas dedicated to sports and culture, the study and technological innovation areas, and the offices used for fundraising. There is also a sports center for individual and team training and competitions, and numerous facilities and training courses dedicated to the various disabilities – physical, sensory, mental, intellectual and multiple – with the aim of supporting and accompanying patients towards their newfound everyday life.

The internal vertical distribution takes place through eight distinct lift blocks and through ramps suitable for all types of users, while the entire complex is internally divided into four functional blocks and reaches a maximum height of 97.6 meters in the north corner, gradually descending and opening towards the opposite vertex, in the direction of the adjacent public park, to a minimum height of 28.5 meters. This formal choice merges nature and the surrounding landscape in the architecture, recognising green as having an extraordinary therapeutic quality, offering an extraordinary availability of open spaces and gardens dedicated to all different types of rehabilitation.

Located in the central Blloku district of Tirana in the immediate vicinity of the Albanian Government Presidential building, the West Residences project occupies a long narrow strip and stands on an important road artery with its shorter façade opening onto it, while the more extended façade looks out over a large public space within the urban fabric that allows it to enter into a direct dialogue with other public buildings in the area. The building is a composition of overlapping cubes, a series of slightly staggered independent residential modules so that each housing unit has at least one loggia or a balcony. This architectural solution allows different visual cones for each of the thirty apartments into which the building is divided so as to offer all the inhabitants a perception of the city of Tirana in its entirety. In addition, each housing unit is provided with double exposure to the outside in order to provide the maximum not only in terms of views but also and above all in terms of light and natural ventilation. The design of the structure also means that the apartments are not positioned directly on top of each other but that there is a second interplay with the result that the units of one floor are arranged so as to straddle two apartments on the floor below thereby giving rise to an intentional misalignment allowing the façade design to move.

There are two central structural elements that contain lifts and utilities and around which the layout of the apartments develops. These have the sleeping areas with the bedrooms facing North and the living and day areas open instead towards the South, thus being able to take advantage of a greater daily amount of natural light. The building’s foundation, which consists of the first two floors, is entirely open to the city by hosting a range of commercial and recreational activities that help to reinforce the connection of the entire project with the urban context. Even the use of materials underlines the evident difference between the ground and the upper floors and the alternating of stone surfaces and floor-to-ceiling windows that contribute to the relationship between inside and outside and between private and public spaces. The commercial area interacts with the public space through a continuous flooring that houses a small pocket garden characterized by trees arranged in regular rows and which is partly lawn and partly indigenous shrub-like bushes.

The rectangular shift of the residential units in both directions generates a façade characterized by staggered floors, where the overhangs give life to an interplay of full and empty spaces, underlined by the solid stone frames that highlight each housing unit and its specific unique nature. The glazed parapets of the loggias encourage the visual perception of the volumes themselves, which is made obvious in the smaller façades by the insertion of full height glazed floors that alternate with those clad in more protruding slabs. A façade detail, which enhances the material choice is the vertical outlining of the slabs which increases their movement and colour variation. The alternation of recessed volumes and projecting surfaces gives each interior environment and each housing unit the option of enjoying private outdoor spaces enriched with regular plant elements that further highlight the design of the façades and the material treatment.
