The idea of defending public spaces in their vitality, Stefano Boeri‘s idea of preserving their fundamental character through “an accurate use of natural beauty and its symbolic value” echoes and finds application in the project for the new Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, designed by Svigals + Partners after the killer attack occurred in 2012. The design of the new school envisages strategic use of green spaces as an anti-terrorism measure. Interviewed by Dezeen, Jay Brontman, managing partner of Svigals + Partners, backed Boeri’s idea and the call for conscious use of trees and plants, saying that “nature, art and accessibility are just as important as the security functions “.
